A Grade 9 topic in Computer Science: “§1. The structure of a computer network” (pp. 293–295, T. R. Oruskulov, M. U. Kasymaliev).
A system of computers connected by channels that transmit information is called a computer network. Small networks working within one organisation or company are called local networks (LANs); the computers in a LAN are usually up to 1 km apart. A LAN is often organised on the “file server” principle. A server computer is a machine that shares common resources among many users; the English word “server” means “a serving device”.
Global networks join many local networks and separate computers; they are also called telecommunication networks. A computer at a node is called a “host machine”, and a subscriber's computer a “terminal”. A network serving one branch of the state is called corporate, and one working in a certain region is called regional. The worldwide system of computer networks is called the Internet (international + net).
