  • 6–20 kids
  • 10+ questions
  • 1–15 minutes
On a mountain pasture, girls and boys sit mixed in a circle on a red shyrdak felt rug while one child walks around the outside holding a red handkerchief

How to play

  1. Type in the names

The teacher enters the girls' and boys' names — they sit mixed around the circle.

  2. The handkerchief goes round

A random child holds the handkerchief, walks around the circle and quietly drops it behind someone's back.

  3. Look behind you!

The child notices it within 1–3 seconds, grabs it and gives chase — and that is when their question appears.

  4. Caught or got away

A correct answer catches the dropper, who goes to the middle. A wrong answer or running out of time lets the dropper sit in the empty seat.

  • Golden handkerchiefEvery 5th round is worth double points.
  • Lightning fast!A correct answer in under 3 seconds — +1 bonus.
  • 50/503 lifelines for the whole class: two wrong answers disappear.
  • ForfeitA child in the middle does a forfeit and returns to the circle.

What it looks like in class

  • One board, the whole class

Open the game on a projector or interactive whiteboard: the circle, the question and the timer are big enough for everyone to see.

  • Everyone gets a turn

The handkerchief lands behind those who have chased the least — even with 20 children, the same child is not picked again and again.

  • No account needed

The demo opens without signing up: type in your pupils' names and start right in the lesson.

Forfeits for the middle

A caught child goes to the middle and does the forfeit on their card. When the teacher taps “Done”, they rejoin the circle in the next round. Forfeits can be switched off in the settings.

  • Tongue twister
  • Riddle
  • Proverb
  • Song
  • Dance
  • 5 squats

Frequently asked questions

What is Jooluk tashtamai?

A Kyrgyz folk game, much like Drop the Handkerchief: children sit in a circle while one of them quietly drops a handkerchief behind someone's back. Whoever notices it chases the dropper. Here, a question decides whether the chaser catches them.

How do we play in class?

Open the game on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Enter 6 to 20 pupils (up to 12 girls and up to 12 boys, 6 + 6 by default), choose how long the game lasts (1, 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes) and the answer time (5–30 seconds). The pupil whose name appears on the screen comes to the board and answers.

What happens to a caught child?

They go to the middle of the circle and their seat closes up. Their card shows a forfeit: a tongue twister, a riddle, a proverb, a song, a dance or 5 squats. When the teacher taps “Done”, they rejoin the circle in the next round.

Is it free?

The demo is free and opens without signing up. Your own questions need an account, and the teachers' catalogue needs a PRO subscription.

Where do the questions come from?

Create a topic in the question bank and add at least 10 questions (of any type: one or several correct answers, true/false, or a written answer). The BilimAi bot can also write questions on a topic for you.

Who wins?

Every child scores for themselves: +2 for a catch, +1 to the dropper who gets away, +1 for a correct answer in under 3 seconds, and double points in a golden-handkerchief round. At the end the top scorers stand on the podium, and the girls vs boys total is shown too.
